Four wrestlers qualify for state tournament after placing in South Sectionals

After a bye in the first round, Jack Stapleton beat Gbedema of Catholic Memorial, where he eventually fell to Kourafalos of Winchester, placing 4th.  Xavier Fischer (126lb) battled hard, losing by a score of 7-2 to Avery of Woburn. Chris Caputo (138lb) also lost by decision, with a score fo 8-4 to Doherty of Winchester. Liam Kelly (145lb) earned himself a place in states after a good match with Appolon of Norwood, losing 16-7.  Captain Matthew LaBelle (160lb) finished 2nd, winning 3 matches and eventually losing in the finals to #1 Bastarache of Natick.  LaBelle won his first match 12-3, won by pin in his second, and won in sudden victory in the semi-finals.  Freshman Kevin Swanton (195lb) did not qualify for states but showed well this past weekend.  He earned a bye in to the quarterfinals where he beat Ganno of North Quincy, before losing in the semis.  Austin Wright (113lb) lost his first match but still qualifies as an alternate.

This Friday, the following wrestlers will participate in States at Algonquin Regional High School.

#CatsonMats take down Wellesley

After coaching and reffing the Milton Youth Wrestlers against Pembroke Youth, the Wildcats fought their own battle against a good Wellesley side.

Austin Wright started things off with a great win at the 112 weight class. Jack Stapleton then battled hard to win his match, setting the stage for Chris Caputo, and what would turn out to be a crucial pin. After a slow first period, and both wrestlers hesitant to make a move, the second period opened up a little.  With about 16 seconds left, Caputo scored points for a take down and appeared to be in a promising position, only to get flipped over.  As the clock ticked under 10 seconds, Caputo impressively flipped his opponent back over and scored the pin with just 4 seconds remaining.  Definitely not a match to miss, with such an athletic move displayed by Caputo.  Captain Matt LaBelle would go on to win his match, as would Lacyre Fleurimond and Freshman Kevin Swanton, taking the match 34-31 over the Raiders. Very good night for the Cats, and they move to 4-4 on the season.

Wrestling takes down Brookline to move back to 3-3

Wrestling pulled a tough one out on Thursday night vs Brookline. Wins by “Stone-Cold” Austin Wright, Jack “Stapes” Stapleton, Xavier “Big Fish” Fischer, Chris Caputo, Matt Labelle, andBig Kevin Swanton earned Milton the 39-29 victory over the Warriors.  The score was 33-29 going into the final match.  A pin by either side would have won it.  Freshman Kevin Swanton was sent down early but fought hard and regained control, earning a vital pin that had the fans – and the entire basketball team who was watching – on their feet and cheering.  “A young side, but improving every day”, coach Carroll said.  There is a lot of room for growth on this team, with Freshman Wally Heller showing well despite the loss and another Freshman Cooper Madigan earning a JV win.

The #CatsonMats take on Weymouth next Wednesday, 1/11 at HOME, 7:00pm.  They will also partake in the Canton Invitational Tournament over the weekend.
